ReuvenBarOn.org - Providing Information and Fostering Discussion on Emotional Intelligence

Welcome to my website which I created in order to provide a clear, concise and accurate description of who I am, what my model of emotional-social intelligence is, how best to measure it and apply it at home, school, work and in healthcare. One of the primary reasons for doing this is that I have come across, from time to time, inaccurate descriptions of me, my model and what it describes. Furthermore, I have received numerous requests for information about my model over the years; and placing the responses to frequently asked questions on a website is more efficient than responding to individual requests. An additional aim is to provide a platform for discussing aspects of emotional-social intelligence the site visitor wishes to discuss, including the Bar-On model versus other approaches to describing, studying and applying this construct.

This website is intended for laypeople, students, academics, researchers and practitioners in a wide variety of fields who are interested in various aspects of emotional intelligence.

A New US Air Force Study Concludes that Applying EI Will Save Them Millions: In 2007, the US Air Force began to explore the possibility of applying emotional intelligence (EI) to predict performance in training programs for pilots, air traffic controllers and pararescue jumpers (“PJs”). The PJ program was one of their top priorities. This training program takes nearly two years to complete and includes many hours of combat training, parachuting, diving, paramedical instruction as well as extensive air rescue and evacuation preparation. The total cost of completing the training is estimated at $250,000 per trainee. The Air Force’s aim was to apply the Bar-On EQ-i to assess EI and identify those PJ trainees who have the best chance of successfully completing this highly specialized military course. All of the trainees who began the 2008 course completed the Bar-On EQ-i, and the results of those who successfully completed the program were compared with those who did not complete it (in a process referred to by Dr. Bar-On as Star Performer Profiling™). The results revealed that EI has a significant impact on performance among PJ trainees and that the Bar-On EQ-i is capable of predicting who will be expected to successfully complete this course. The current findings confirm previous research findings indicating that EI significantly impacts occupational performance. By applying the EI model that emerged, the Air Force estimates that it will save approximately $190,000,000 by significantly reducing mismatches and selecting the right people for the course over time. These findings were first reported in the 07/21/2010 edition of the EI Insider.
